Our Process
Every TimberVas bowl is made one at a time in Cache County, Utah. Each piece is selected for grain, figure, and character, then turned, sanded, and finished by hand.
- Wood selection: We choose blanks for strength, balance, and visual interest.
- Turning: Bowls are shaped on the lathe for clean curves and comfortable use.
- Sanding: Progressive sanding brings out depth and clarity in the grain.
- Finishing: A hand-rubbed finish is applied and cured for a smooth, durable feel.
Materials
We work primarily with hardwoods (the exact species is listed on each product page when known). Natural features like knots, mineral streaks, spalting, and grain variation are part of what makes each bowl unique.
- Natural variation: No two bowls will match exactly.
- Character marks: Small inclusions and color shifts are normal in real wood.
- Movement: Wood responds to humidity and temperature over time.
Finish
Unless otherwise noted on the product page, bowls are finished with a hand-applied, food-safe finish designed to highlight grain and feel good in the hand.
- Food contact: Finished pieces are suitable for dry foods and gentle use.
- Display: Many customers use bowls as functional decor or catch-alls.
Care Instructions
Do
- Hand wash quickly with mild soap and warm water.
- Dry immediately with a towel.
- Store in a dry area away from sinks, windows, and heat vents.
- Use a soft cloth to dust/display-clean as needed.
Don’t
- Do not put wooden bowls in the dishwasher.
- Do not soak in water or leave wet items sitting inside.
- Do not microwave or expose to prolonged heat.
- Do not use harsh cleaners, bleach, or abrasive pads.
Refreshing the Finish
If the wood looks dry over time, you can refresh it with a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or a wood butter/wax blend.
- Wipe the bowl clean and let it fully dry.
- Apply a small amount of oil/wax with a soft cloth.
- Let it absorb (15–30 minutes), then buff off any excess.
- Repeat as needed until the sheen returns.
Notes on Use
- Dry foods: Great for nuts, wrapped candy, fruit (brief contact), and serving.
- Moist foods: Short-term contact is fine; avoid long sits and always dry promptly.
- Heat: Hot liquids and high heat can stress wood and finish—avoid.
